This composition pays homage to the traditional painting trope of "la pieta" but specifically refers to Oswaldo Guayasamin's "La Pietá de Avignon". Guayasamin paints a version of the Middle Ages masterpiece, by Enguerrand Quarton, and changes one thing: he depicts the Madonna and Christ without a celestial halo and shows Jesus as a naked man to thus humanize the religious icon - the same metaphor of humanizing empathy is used in this piece to create a depiction of Chicano history and contemporary Latinx existence in the USA. The lower section shows a panoramic view of the Sonora desert with the Chicago skyline rising in the distance behind a man made wall.
